Belarus approves MTS, Velcom 3G licences, report says

A working committee for the Belarusian State Commission for Radio Frequencies (SCRF), under the remit of the Belarus Security Council, has approved a government initiative to award 5MHz of spectrum for UMTS (3G) mobile services to domestic cellcos MTS Belarus and Mobile Digital Communications (Velcom), local news agency BelTA reports citing Sergei Novikov, the head of the regulation department of the Information Technologies and Communications Ministry, as saying. It is understood the SCRF will make its final decision on the award before the end of the year. On 23 July this year the SCRF made a decision to allocate 3G frequencies to another mobile operator Belarusian Telecommunications Network (BeST).
